New Column: An (other) Inconvenient Truth. The Backstory Behind the Drinking Age Debate

Recently, much attention has been focused on the public debate over whether or not it makes sense to lower the minimum legal drinking age to 18.  The Amethyst Initiative, founded by former Middlebury College President John M. McCardell, has circulated a petition to college presidents inviting their participation.  At last count, 129 (out of some 3,700) have signed on.  As you might suspect, there are many individuals, organizations, and government agencies that oppose a lower drinking age – citing, among other things, new brain research showing the harmful effects of drinking during adolescence and young adulthood and the significant reduction in automobile crash deaths among youth since the drinking age was raised to 21.

Stephen’s new column, An (other) Inconvenient Truth: The Backstory Behind the Drinking Age Debate, lays out the arguments.
