Wallace to Win Susquehanna Leadership Award

Stephen was recently informed that he will be the next recipient of the Susquehanna University Alumni Leadership Award. This award is given to alumni who have shown outstanding leadership in their careers or communities. Nominees will have had a significant role in bringing about important change or contributing to outstanding results in their professional, civic, or volunteer activities. Stephen will receive the award on campus on October 24, 2010.

The May/June edition (staff training edition) of Camping Magazine features a new article from Stephen titled, Confessions of a Disciplinarian. An excerpt appears below. Like many camp directors – and other educators for that matter – I am frequently thrust into the unenviable role of disciplinarian. And, frankly, I don’t feel that I’m very good at it.

Wallace Joins Oprah Panel for No Phone Zone Day

On Friday, April 30th, Stephen joined a panel of experts at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University to discuss the dangers of cell phone use while driving. This event is part of Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studio’s No Phone Zone Day, aimed at increasing awareness, honoring victims, and motivating individuals to take action. Events were held around the country and the Oprah Winfrey Show featured a special episode about distracted driving with highlights of local events via live satellite. Close to 300 SADD students from across Massachusetts filled the auditorium and served as the backdrop for live interviews from Boston.

The new edition of Camp: A resource for families (a parent enewsletter published by the American Camp Association) includes an article written by Stephen and one of his former campers, Ben Seifer.

Here’s an excerpt: It seems that we cannot turn on the TV or open the newspaper without the lead story being about the state of the economy, corruption on Wall Street, and a lot of loss. Not only is this constant negative bombardment emotionally exhausting, it gives the impression that everything is just a mere flush away from being sucked down the giant bowl of economic failure, and leaves us wondering “what is left?”

Wallace to Speak in Fairfield, TX

His remarks are set to kick off the establishment of a new SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) program at the school and will include information about underage drinking, other drug use, bullying, violence, and driving.

Stephen gave a series of presentations to parents and students at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY on March 11th and 12th. His topics included underage drinking, other drug use, bullying, violence, suicide, and impaired driving. Stephen shared stories from his book, Reality Gap, which is being offered for purchase by parents through the school.
