On Tuesday, March 9th, Stephen spoke to the student body at Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. His topics included underage drinking, other drug use, bullying, and creating positive changes in the school environment. He was introduced by one of his campers who attends BCD.

In November and December, the parents of four Pottstown area teenagers received the dreaded phone call in the middle of the night or an officer appeared at their door — the hopeless message that a child had died in a car wreck.

Those deaths are now part of statistics that show that death rates for teens on the nation’s roadways are alarmingly and unacceptably high.

Wallace to Speak to Students/Parents in Hollis, NH

The stunning death of Dylan Hill last weekend is, of course, an absolute tragedy.

Four days after the 16-year-old Gloucester High School sophomore’s body was found lying on Flats Beach off Rocky Neck and Eastern Point Road, the pain seems greater than ever. And in that vein, our hearts and condolences go out to his family, his many, many friends, the entire Gloucester High School community, and all of those throughout the community at-large who are sharing in the grief.

February 16th-19th, Stephen is attending the American Camp Association’s (ACA) national conference in Denver, Colorado. This event also marks the 100th anniversary of ACA. Stephen is a member of ACA, writes for their professional publication, Camping Magazine (as well as providing content for online publications) and regularly speaks at camp-related conferences on issues related to youth development, leadership, and decision-making. Many young people report feeling pressure to have sex (or to start “getting in the game” as some of them call it), especially on certain occasions, such as an anniversary or Valentine’s Day. Sixteen-year-old Mark started dating Marci in seventh grade. By the start of eighth grade they were having oral sex, and on Valentine’s Day in the ninth grade they had intercourse for the first time.

Stephen’s new article, The Art of Camp, appears in the February edition of Indy’s Child. Here’s an excerpt:

Many camps cater to a broad range of aptitudes with gender and age boundaries barely visible. In one area more than most, these factors mix in a creative whirlwind that produces some of the most ingenious, and remarkably practical displays of young minds: the arts.

Art comes in many forms. Camp classics such as tie-dye, macramé and wooden name signs are pursued alongside advanced clay pottery classes, courses in digital photography, dance, cinema, creative writing and theater.

Camp allows girls to carve sailing ships from blocks of wood and boys to throw pots at the wheel. Should this be surprising in the 21st century? Not to anyone involved in education. Nevertheless, it represents an important alternative in a broader culture that still too often adheres to stricter definitions of what constitutes normative expression by boys and by girls.

Wallace Joins DWI Committee

Stephen recently accepted an invitation from The Institute for Behavior and Health to join a committee that is working to develop a comprehensive model program for the management of DWI and drug-impaired offenders. Stephen is a past board member of the National Commission Against Drunk Driving.
